HVAC Insider Presents 2012 Man of the Year Award

William (Bill) Rau, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating

There are many men and women in our HVAC industry deserving recognition and honors for their outstanding service and achievements. Bill Rau is past due for this award.

In my job with the HVAC Insider I have the honor and pleasure of meeting some of America’s finest executives. Years ago we instigated a yearly recognition of the people who have had a great impact on our industry and our lives.

Bill Rau took the helm at Mitsubishi Electric as the ductless split phenomena was just beginning. He was a seasoned, successful, professional manager before signing on with the global giant. During the past eighteen years he has recruited a staff second to none and guided them to become even better.

Through Bill’s guidance, Mitsubishi Electric is poised to take their innovative products to the next level. Ductless and VRF are becoming mainline products in our HVAC Industry, no longer delegated to niche product status.

My very first visit to Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating in Atlanta was to a single room office in an office park. My friend Henry Dekker had resigned from Westinghouse Electric and opened this small office representing consumer electronics.

Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating quality set them apart from the competition. The company grew steadily and added new products to their offering. I saw my very first fax machine in Henry’s showroom. He also demonstrated to me a revolutionary air conditioner, the ductless split.

My trade papers at the time (1969) were dedicated to the major appliance and consumer electronics industry. Retailing News grew from a single state edition in Georgia to become a national newspaper. When we evolved as the HVAC Insider (1991), Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating continued to be a friend and supporter.

Attending the ground breaking ceremonies for the next Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating headquarters in Duluth, Georgia this year my thought was, “from a 600 square foot office to a half million plus square foot complex… what a company”.

Bill Rau and the Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating team are an inspiration to all of us. They encourage us to live the dream.
